Where to start...here's what Maren & I came up with:
!!! SPOILERS - SPOILERS !!!
The experience: I went with sisters & their friends to wait at the Idaho Falls Barnes & Nobles (I was in Rexburg for the weekend) for the midnight release of Breaking Dawn....and it was silly-fun! (pics to come) We were definitely the minority, most of the fans there were young teen girls decked in prom garb. But we wore our homemade "Bite me Edward" tees with pride and cheered with the rest of them when the clock struck 12. When we finally had our books in hand we raced to the car to devour its contents, Maren and I stayed up till 5 am reading but had to stop for some sleep. Then picked it back up at 8am and finished by dinner. This one is LONG - like nearly 800 pages!!!
The review: The book itself I did like, but had a hard time getting through it. Disappointing, for sure. It seemed that Stephanie Meyers was writing more about action rather than interaction. I always loved the relationships in her books and how she explores them, but this time there was a lot of bizarre situations (even for vampires and werewolves). The characters sort of take on new personalities (2-dimensional at that) and I didn't like it. Some characters were missing almost all together (did Jasper have even one line?). Halfway thought the book Edward sort of becomes invisible, and Bella takes on a new personality. They are still in love, but somehow it is not the same.
The middle portion is written from Jacob's perspective, which I found extremely hard to get through. I was also very disappointed that our heroin eventually gets everything she wants. The whole point of the Twilight saga was that Bella had to choose, that she couldn't have it all and she had to make a choice between family, friends, love, etc.
From the very beginning I was distracted, thinking of all those young (as young as 10 yrs old) girls that were at the release party who were now reading the steamy honeymoon chapters. Yikes! I had heard rumors that the publishers were debating posting an age rating (15 or 16) warning of violence & mature subject matter. I AGREE that this is N-O-T a 'youth' novel. Be aware!
Breaking Dawn ties loose ends up, but in an over the top way...making "happily ever after" an understatement. All-in-all I did like the book, mostly because it finally put an end to the anticipation. My favorite parts were the chapters comprising Bella's transformation, the beginning wedding scene, and the closing moment. Also, I liked that she had powers, but I thought Stephanie would work Bella's weird and constant 'nightmares' into her vampness somehow. Maybe I missed something. There is so much more I could say, but won't...but I will say this: I am going to read it again in a week to see if my opinion changes. I give it 3 of 5 stars...Twilight will always outshine the others in my opinion.
Well, from what I have heard from others I have talked with, I might be the odd man out. Everyone has their own opinion, which is great!
!!!SPOILERS!!!!
I really enjoyed Breaking Dawn & had a hard time putting it down! I agree it is not a youth novel, to say the least, but was glad that Edward held to his promise he made with Bella that they would try after they were married. I was rather pleased & surprised with the outcome too! This was something that I had not expected, nor thought possible. I was glad to see that Jacob was able to imprint & stay in the picture, he has a happy ending too! I am a sucker for fairy tale endings, so I was pleased how everything turned out & that Jacob was not left to be alone while Bella worried about him. I liked having the other point of view to read from, although it was kind of strange at first.
I liked how Rosalie had a more up front role this book. She wasn't bitter when Bella did turn into a vampire because she did get to take advantage of the human experiences. Rosalie's step up did downplay some of the other characters though. (Jasper had 1 line, but it wasn't until the very end almost.) I liked that Bella used her power to let Edward in her mind (though it happened at the last possible moment).
I was sad when Alice went away, not knowing she would do what she did! She is one of my favorite characters, I wish I could have an Alice in my life, who wouldn't! To have an endless closet full of clothes, & a fun friend/sister! (Not saying that my sisters aren't fun & wonderful! No one can compare to Alice though.) I realized she had to come back, but it left a void while she was gone. My favorite parts were the first Bella Book, especially the wedding, the transformation & the events leading up to it, plus the very end. Parts of it were a little far fetched, but I enjoyed it still the same. All in all I though it was a great book & am sad that the fairy tale had to end. Good thing I can read them over & over again!
